Overview
The Department of Clinical Anatomy is proud to support Mayo Clinic’s three-shield Practice, Education, and Research priorities.
Each year, our Clinical Anatomy Laboratory hosts multiple internal anatomy-based activities, instructing students from the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences, as well as residents and fellows from the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Medicine.
In collaboration with the Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development, we make possible multiple national and international courses, including Mayo Clinic's “Teach the Teachers” Advanced Elbow Surgical Skills Course, Mayo Clinic Open and Endoscopic Techniques to the Cranial Base Surgery Course, and the Mendelson Advanced Facial Anatomy Course.
Practice and Research have ongoing access to the CAL facilities and the Clinical Anatomy Studio. Research and Practice improvement activities are supported by the Mayo Clinic Body Donation Program and Mayo Clinic Approved Body Donation Programs including the University of Minnesota.
Clinical Anatomists from Department of Clinical Anatomy partner with clinicians and scientists providing expertise to foster innovation, improvement, and advancement of procedural and surgical care. This unique collaboration made possible the institutions first two face transplants in 2017 and 2024. The clinical anatomist’s expertise continues to enhance procedural innovation, efficiency, and safety.
The Institutional Human Cadaveric Use Committee, with multi-disciplinary representation, oversees all activities with and use of donor tissue across Mayo Clinic.
Clinical Anatomy Laboratory
The Department of Clinical Anatomy is proud to provide Mayo Clinic with a uniquely designed Clinical Anatomy Laboratory on its campus in Rochester, Minnesota.
The Clinical Anatomy Laboratory is set up to facilitate training in clinical and surgical skills, innovation in clinical practice, and cadaveric research. The laboratory space is designed to accommodate individual needs, small, or large groups. In addition to the laboratory space, the Department has a dedicated technologically equipped instructional room.
The Clinical Anatomy Laboratory offers facilitated opportunities to simulate procedures for joint arthroscopy, laparoscopy, thoracentesis, paracentesis, pericardiocentesis, suturing, soft tissue flap raising, airway management, emergency medicine, and trauma surgery, amongst others.
Clinical Anatomy Studio
The Clinical Anatomy Laboratory includes a studio space staffed with dedicated Content Production Specialists to capture real-time and recorded high-resolution content as well as three-dimensional photogrammetry. Our team of experts is highly trained and experienced in surgical content capture and can provide live, real-time content support as well as expert content production for later consumption.

Rhoton Neurosurgery and Otolaryngology Surgical Anatomy Program
The Department of Clinical Anatomy houses the Rhoton Neurosurgery and Otolaryngology Surgical Anatomy Program formalized its collaboration with the. The Rhoton Program was initiated in February 2021 and officially opened in September 2022, sponsored by the Department of Neurological Surgery in Rochester. The program is directed under the mentorship of Dr. Maria Peris Celda, M.D., Ph.D., who is a Professor of Anatomy and holds a joint appointment within the Department of Clinical Anatomy and Dr. Luciano Leonel who is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anatomy and Neurological Surgery.
The program includes training for residents, national and international fellows, and medical students and young trainees, and Enterprise CME and non-CME anatomy courses. Due to the partnership with our Department, the Rhoton Program offers hands-on cadaveric dissections to improve and refine manual skills and anatomical knowledge related to head and neck, spine and peripheral nerve anatomy, neuroanatomy and neurosurgical procedures.
In addition, the integration of the Rhoton Program is intended to more effectively combine the expertise of clinical anatomists into program and curriculum design and execution, provide more focused administrative and clinical oversight and management, optimize facilities, maximize commercial revenue, and build a strong programmatic foundation and framework for growth.
